How it Started
JANET + GEORGE was founded by Linda Nuamah because she wanted to see change in the fashion industry and the world. Around the world, marginalised groups have been adversely affected by the exploitation of the resources of their ancestral lands. One of these groups is the whole continent of Africa. Despite being the richest continent in natural resources on the planet, Africa remains the poorest in the world. Tired of reading about people surviving on less than one dollar per day, corruption, malnutrition, famine or dying in an attempt to escape their poverty, she decided that enough is enough.
`Nothing we can do can change the past, but everything we do changes the future.’
With this in mind, she saw Africa for what it is; a beautiful large continent in abundance of natural resources, beautiful people with a kind and forgiving heart, never ending creativity, resourcefulness, and always hoping and working towards a better tomorrow. After a trip to her native Ghana, West Africa, she decided to transform JANET + GEORGE to cater to promoting African fashion designers on the continent and in the diaspora trying to alleviate Africa out of poverty, and change the narrative.
